confusion sets in
Does anybody know what a Hawkeye is? Thanks to a post on Drinkn From a Fire Hose, we know the origin of the word, but what is a Hawkeye exactly?I understand that Herky the Hawk is just a character that acts as a mascot for the Iowa Hawkeyes, similar to a elementary school girls volleyball team using the class fish as a mascot. It doesn't have to make sense, it just needs to be something that the team can count on for good luck. That's fine. That doesn't bother me, he is a Hawk, not a Hawkeye. I also understand that the "tiger hawk" is their logo. I must say it is a rather douchey logo at that:
Are they smoking crack? They are getting it confused with it's on-field representative, Herky the Hawk. Freaking CBS. How can a bird's eyeball possibly be a predator? What is it a threat too? If anything the eyelids are more of a predator than they eye ball, they can at leat block things.
By the way -- who's winning that contest? Oh, that's right, your very own ISU Cyclones.
Moving on, if you read DFaFH's article, it says that there was a hero in The Last of the Mohicans named Hawkeye or something. If I remember right, there was also a guy on M.A.S.H. named Hawkeye. What do these two things have in common?
Well neither of the Hawkeye's were actually birds, let alone worthy of being mascots. They were names. Hell they could have been called the Iowa Walter's, or the Iowa Billy Bob's for all that's worth. But if I had to pick between an Indian and Captain Pierce, I would probably go with the nurse-bangin doctor:
I think the public needs to know that there is absolutely no such thing AS A HAWKEYE, thus the state of Iowa should be renamed "The Cyclone State" Although I think our football team will take care of getting that name on our own this fall.
You want a Hawkeye logo? Here you go, the eye of a Hawk. It's even got the black and gold thing going to save money on apparel:

Funny shit D,
But really, cyclone state?? Kansas is already nicknamed the cyclone state. But I guess that would be right up ISU's alley to copy something, and of course change the colors!!
I guess when it boils down to it the HAWKEYE is a nickname, which we don't deny. But also remember that A Hawk's Eye is a very sacred and well respected Indian symbol.
Simply, A Hawkeye is someone who supports the University of IOWA and the state of Iowa for that matter. Herky and the TigerHawk are merely our mascots. The Nickname Hawkeye merely recognizes IOWA history and tradition unlike a cyclone or a cardinal.
In the end you're jealous, I get it. Our nickname can be confusing. Unlike a cyclone, which is a swirling out of control mass of hot air, which pretty much represents all State fans!
WAH WAH WAH....
GO HAWKS!
If only schools could just go with something that is unambiguous and straight forward. You know, like a Panther.
Sincerely,
Northern Iowa (the scrappy third wheel of the Iowa public colleges)
I have to give that credit, they actually have a true mascot for their team name.
If they could just get rid of that gay little "Row row, roww" thing they do, they might even earn a little respect.
I want to see them lead a panther out on the field. That would be the way to go.
Until then, they are just a college team playing in a dome. Psst. Please
YOU'RE A CYCLONE HUH? GUESS YOU ARE A HAWKEYE ALSO. LOOK AT MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY ON THE WEB. AND I QUOTE: HAWKEYE-A NATIVE OR RESIDENT OF IOWA.
NICE TO MEET YA BROTHER. THE HAWKEYE NATION LIVES ON, EVEN WITHIN THE CYCLONE FANS!
wow, isu is winning that contest last time i checked iowa was winning, wat was it? 35-18? yeah, shut the fuck up, and its the name of a tribe, u obviosly dont know wat ur talking about
This post was written May 31st. You need to know that.
Note the reference to CBS' "Most Dominant College Mascot on Earth" poll. If you remember Iowa didn't make it very far, and ISU was named the world's most dominant.
I know you think you are being funny, but this is old news my man. For someone who's team got beat by the worst team in the Big 12, you are pretty cocky.

While I understand what you are trying to say, just look in the mirror. Your moniker is the Cyclones, and your mascot is a cardinal. If you can adequately explain the logic behind this (and no, the color cardinal does not count) I'll come back to Iowa and buy you a beer.
So UNI is just a college team playing a dome aye?
Last time I checked UNI can beat ISU at Jack Trice. How pathetic.
